KOLKATA — Bengal were bowled out for 143, their lowest total of the season, on a truncated opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group-C match against Maharashtra at Eden Gardens on Monday. Mohammed Shami struck twice with the new ball, dismissing Prithvi Shaw and trapping Digvijay Patil leg-before, to leave Bengal reeling early. Abhishek Porel top-scored with 54, adding 66 for the eighth wicket with Pradipta Pramanik (31) as the tail offered some resistance. Maharashtra pacers Pradeep Dadhe and Tanay Sanghavi claimed three wickets each. Bad light, owing to overcast skies, stopped play before stumps, with Maharashtra ending the day at 21 for two in eight overs, trailing by 122 runs. The result leaves Bengal with considerable work to do, while Maharashtra will be encouraged by the new-ball conditions.
