WASHINGTON — The 49th Kennedy Center Honors will take place in 2026 at Capital One Arena, officials announced, marking the first time the ceremony has been held outside the Washington, D.C. institution. The recipients are composer David Foster, playwright David Mamet, songwriter Paul Anka, actor Andy Garcia, and country singer Barbara Mandrell.

The announcement comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues to pursue efforts to close the Kennedy Center for renovations. Since taking over the board in February 2025, Trump has moved to shut the venue, citing the need for extensive repairs. Following his takeover, ticket sales have reportedly declined, with many artists refusing to perform at the facility.

Congressional Representative Joyce Beatty, an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board, filed a lawsuit protesting the closure. Federal Judge Christopher Cooper issued an injunction blocking the shutdown, ruling that only Congress has the authority to change the Center’s name or approve demolition.

Despite that ruling, the Kennedy Center board voted on Sept. 15 to immediately close the venue. The building has since been blocked off, though protestors have continued to gather in front of the structure. On Sept. 17, Judge Cooper ruled that Kennedy Center leadership must provide 30 days’ notice before making any changes to the building, including demolition — after Trump was spotted reading a posterboard that read ‘Kennedy Center Demolished.’

Trump has threatened to block $257 million in congressional renovation funding unless his name is placed on the building and has previously threatened to tear the structure down.

The Kennedy Center Honors, established in 1978, annually recognizes individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the performing arts. The 2026 ceremony’s move to Capital One Arena underscores the current uncertainty surrounding the historic institution.
