Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket after 14-year Australia career

Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, concluding a 14-year career with Australia. The all-rounder, 38, played 286 matches across all formats, scoring 7,226 runs and taking 136 wickets.

Maxwell was a key member of Australia's World Cup-winning teams, winning the 2015 ODI World Cup, the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. His definitive innings came in the 2023 ODI World Cup league stage match against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where he scored an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls after Australia had collapsed to 91 for seven. Adding an unbroken 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins (12), Maxwell secured a three-wicket victory with 19 balls to spare.

Maxwell made his international debut in ODIs against Afghanistan in Sharjah on August 25, 2012. He made his T20I debut against Pakistan later that year and earned his Test cap against India in Hyderabad in March 2013. Throughout his career, he played seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20Is.

Cricket Australia omitted Maxwell from its central contract list for the 2026-27 season, announced in April, as his involvement with the national side had diminished. He was also left out of Australia's T20I squad for the tour of Bangladesh in May-June 2026. Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025, with his final appearance coming against India in the Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai.

While he moves away from international cricket, Maxwell remains contracted to the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League until the end of the 2026-27 season.

His numbers tell part of the story — 3,990 runs in ODIs, 2,897 in T20Is and 339 in Tests — but his legacy will be remembered most vividly through the moments when he made the extraordinary look possible.
