CHENNAI — Chennai Super Kings are considering releasing uncapped allrounder Prashant Veer ahead of the IPL mini auction following an underwhelming season, sources said Friday.
The franchise paid Rs 14.2 crore at last year's auction to acquire Veer and wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma. Veer, 20, who represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket, played six innings for CSK in IPL 2026, scoring 90 runs with a highest score of 43 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and bowled two wicketless overs with his left-arm spin.
Kartik Sharma, meanwhile, had a relatively better campaign. The wicketkeeper-batter played 11 innings and scored 295 runs at a strike rate of 136.57, including two half-centuries with a best of 71 against Lucknow Super Giants.
According to Cricbuzz, there is a possibility that CSK may release Prashant Veer following his underwhelming performance. Releasing the 20-year-old allrounder would free up significant purse space for the franchise entering the mini auction. The franchises must announce their retention and release decisions by November 15, with the mini auction expected to be held on December 16 in Goa.
CSK, the five-time IPL champions, failed to qualify for the playoffs last season, marking their first three-season playoff drought since 2008. The franchise may also look to buy back Veer at a lower price at the auction.
Prashant Veer was named UP T20 League's Emerging Player of The Season in 2025 after hitting 320 runs at a strike-rate of over 155 while averaging 64. He took eight wickets as well while maintaining an economy of 6.69. A fan of India legend Yuvraj Singh, Veer was nicknamed 'Miller' after the South Africa star David Miller by one of his coaches.
CSK will make their final decision on retentions and releases in the coming weeks as they look to rebuild after missing the playoffs.
