NEWCASTLE — Everton claimed their first away league win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United on Monday, a result that left the home side booed off at both half-time and full-time.

Thierno Barry's second-half goal proved the difference, arriving shortly after the break when a quick free-kick released Tyrique George. George's shot squirmed under Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, allowing Barry to tap home into an empty net. Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle believed the goal should have been disallowed for a stray elbow from Barry on Fabian Schar in the build-up.

The home side, booed off at the interval, struggled to impose themselves throughout. Anthony Elanga went close for Newcastle when his effort struck the post in the 66th minute. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a good save from Yoane Wissa later in the half.

Newcastle's evening deteriorated in stoppage time. Substitute Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card within 86 seconds and was sent off, leaving the Magpies with 10 men. Despite late pressure, including a shot on target from Yoane Wissa saved by Pickford, Everton held on for the win.

The result moves Everton up to seventh in the table, while Newcastle drop to 13th. The Toffees, who were without Jack Grealish due to a fitness issue, have now won back-to-back games against Newcastle, following their 3-1 Carabao Cup victory on Thursday. Newcastle have lost four of their last five games in all competitions.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher described Newcastle's performance as "flat and a little bit boring," believing they are in for a tough season. Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle acknowledged the boos, stating: "After a performance like that, I can understand that. That's a reality, and I am responsible for that." Everton manager David Moyes said he was "incredibly proud of the team" whose effort and commitment were unquestionable.
