AGARTALA — Three Border Security Force personnel and a local youth were injured in a clash at Ashabari in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Monday, officials said.

The incident occurred during a protest against the detention and alleged assault of a youth named Hefzur Rahman, son of Shahajan Mia. Villagers alleged Rahman was beaten while in BSF custody during jungle clearance work near Natunbazar road and sustained a leg fracture. Protesters blocked the Ashabari-Rahimpur road near Natun Bazar demanding action.

A BSF vehicle bearing registration number TR-01-AL-1051 was travelling from Rahimpur towards Boxanagar when it was intercepted by the crowd. Company Commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar and personnel Manjit were in the vehicle, which was allegedly attacked with sticks and bamboo, leaving all three personnel injured.

Police and BSF personnel were deployed to the scene and brought the situation under control. The injured were shifted to Tripura Medical College and BRAM Hospital in the outskirts of Agartala.

Senior BSF officials visited the area and an investigation has been initiated. Two separate First Information Reports have been filed at the Kalamchoura police station, but no arrests have been made so far.

Simmering tension remains in the area. This is the second incident in the past year involving BSF personnel being injured in Tripura, the previous one having occurred at Bishalgarh market in Sepahijala district.

The BSF has not made an official statement on the incident as of Monday evening.
