WASHINGTON/TEHRAN - The United States conducted limited, secret military strikes against Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, officials said, amid heightened tensions and an Israeli push for post-midterm action.

The attacks, which triggered explosions on the strategic island, were carried out on a smaller scale and kept discreet to avoid signaling an intent to resume a broader military campaign, according to the Wall Street Journal and US officials. Iranian state media confirmed the blasts.

The developments come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pressed President Donald Trump to consider fresh military action against Iran following Tuesday's US midterm elections. Netanyahu and Trump held a telephone conversation on Saturday, with Netanyahu urging strikes after the vote while Trump sought to maintain diplomatic efforts, according to Israeli and US sources.

On Monday, Trump told reporters he was not considering striking Iran after the midterm elections, though he indicated a diplomatic agreement remained possible. US Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism about a negotiated settlement and sent a letter to Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei last week focused on medical supplies and humanitarian aid.

The US and Iran have been engaged in sustained tensions since February 28, with both sides continuing to explore the possibility of a diplomatic settlement even as military posturing continues.
