ARLINGTON/INDIANAPOLIS — Jerry Jones and Carlie Irsay-Gordon offered contrasting visions of accountability Sunday, with the Cowboys owner insisting head coach Brian Schottenheimer will not be fired following a collapse and the Colts owner moving to stabilize a faltering franchise with sweeping changes.

In Arlington, Texas, the Dallas Cowboys squandered a 17-10 lead entering the fourth quarter, ultimately losing 33-30 in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the defeat — the third home loss in four games for Dallas — Jones stood by Schottenheimer, stating simply that firing the coach is not a looming move. "We're not going to get into anything, that's not in my mind at this time," Jones said. The Cowboys, 3-5 on the season, have won consecutive games only once under Schottenheimer, but the owner expressed confidence the situation can be resolved internally.

Across the league in Indianapolis, the scene was markedly different. Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired the general manager and initiated a systematic trade of top talent following a 42-7 blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars that extended the Colts' losing streak to four games. Shane Steichen, whose quarterback Daniel Jones was benched during the game, faced pointed questions about his job security. Steichen said he would evaluate everything going forward, including the quarterback position, but the organization's trajectory appeared to be toward significant change.

Reports indicate Irsay-Gordon could move to fire Steichen as early as Monday. If the ax falls, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo or offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter are expected to assume the interim head coaching role. The Colts have already traded Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks and are expected to move running back Jonathan Taylor.

The divergent paths reflect different ownership philosophies. Jones has previously fired coaches during the season but indicated he does not see a change with Schottenheimer at this point. Irsay-Gordon, who quit on the season by firing her GM, appears ready to accelerate the roster reset with coaching changes possible in the near future. Both franchises enter this week at crossroads, but with markedly different approaches to the challenges at hand.
