Glenn Maxwell retires from T20 International cricket, concluding 13-year international career
Glenn Maxwell has retired from T20 International cricket, concluding a 13-year career that saw him play 130 matches for Australia. The 38-year-old all-rounder, who previously retired from one-day international cricket earlier in 2025, announced his decision after the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Maxwell, known as much for his innovative 360-degree hitting as his utility value, finishes as Australia's third-highest run-scorer in T20 Internationals with 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.42. He is one of just two batters to score five centuries in the format, alongside India's Rohit Sharma.
The retirement comes after a career that included seven Test matches and 149 One Day Internationals, in which Maxwell scored 3,990 runs and took 136 wickets. He was a member of three World Cup squads for Australia.
Maxwell will continue playing franchise cricket with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. His decision to retire from List A cricket was also announced, with his most recent first-class match having been played in 2023.
"Post the last one-day game for Victoria, speaking to my teammates and letting them know that that was going to be my last game for the state was probably harder than I thought it was going to be," Maxwell said. "Knowing that they've played such a huge role in my whole career, every time I've come back, had great team-mates there and a lot of support from the state, I certainly got a little bit choked up speaking in front of the group."
Maxwell's T20I career featured a highest score of 145 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016 and contributions across a tournament span that began debuting before he was considered ready for the Test format. His retirement marks the end of an era for Australian white-ball cricket.
