LOS ANGELES -- Film director Michael Mann was injured Saturday afternoon in an accidental firearms discharge at a gun range in West Los Angeles, authorities said. The incident occurred at a members-only indoor shooting range, where Mann was holstering a .45-caliber handgun when the weapon accidentally discharged, striking him in the left thigh.
The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene after reports of shots fired around 4 p.m. local law enforcement sources said. Officers determined the shooting was accidental and that Mann had no intention of harming himself.
Mann sustained a superficial leg injury, described by sources as subcutaneous, and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. His publicist later issued a statement confirming he was being treated and prepared for release.
The accident occurred as Mann prepared for Heat 2, his follow-up to the 1995 crime thriller Heat. Despite decades of experience as a target shooter, a routine moment at the range turned dangerous in seconds. No life-threatening injuries were reported, and Mann was expected to recover fully following treatment.
The incident is under investigation by the LAPD. Mann, 80, is known for directing Heat, Collateral and Ferrari.
