LIVERPOOL // Jamie Carragher warned Newcastle face a tough Premier League season following their 1-0 home defeat to Everton on Monday Night Football, describing the performance as 'flat and boring' and saying he never thought he would describe the side that way.

Thierno Barry's second-half goal earned Everton their first away win of the season at St James' Park, leaving Newcastle 13th in the table, four points above the bottom three. The Magpies were booed off at both half-time and full-time, marking their fourth defeat in five games across all competitions.

Matthias Jaissle, appointed in August to replace Eddie Howe, saw his side's early promising form fade quickly. Prior to the Everton match, Newcastle had earned entertaining draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth, plus a win at Tottenham. However, that run has unravelled, with no Premier League side losing more home games in 2026 than Newcastle, who endured seven home defeats. The Magpies also endured the longest run in their league history without keeping a clean sheet at St James' Park, stretching to 14 games.

Carragher on Sky Sports suggested the Everton defeat was more important for Newcastle than their Carabao Cup loss last week, and said he feared a long, tough season for the young Magpies side. Jaissle took responsibility for the boos from the supporters, admitting his tactical changes failed to pay off and his team were not brave enough in possession. With a trip to lowly Fulham coming on Saturday, Newcastle face an immediate test to arrest a run that has left the club questioning its identity under new management.
